Healing Through Accelerated Resolution Therapy (ART)
Trauma can leave lasting emotional and physical effects that make it difficult to feel safe, connected, or at peace. Even when time passes, certain memories or sensations may continue to resurface, keeping people stuck in cycles of anxiety, fear, or sadness. Accelerated Resolution Therapy (ART) offers a gentle, effective path toward healing by helping the brain process painful memories in a new way.
At Willard Family Therapy, we use ART to help clients move past trauma, anxiety, grief, and other distressing experiences without the need to relive every painful detail. ART combines the power of imagery and eye movements to help the brain “recode” how difficult memories are stored, reducing emotional pain and promoting lasting relief.
What Is Accelerated Resolution Therapy?
Accelerated Resolution Therapy (ART) is an evidence-based, trauma-focused treatment that helps the brain process and resolve distressing memories. ART uses guided eye movements, similar to the technique used in EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing), to help rewire how traumatic experiences are remembered.
Rather than erasing memories, ART helps reduce the emotional intensity attached to them. Clients remain in full control during sessions, and many experience significant relief in as few as one to five sessions.
How ART Works
During an ART session, your therapist will guide you through a series of calming eye movements while you visualize a distressing memory. You won’t have to describe the details aloud unless you choose to. Through this process, your brain begins to store the memory differently, transforming it into a neutral, less distressing version.
This process allows you to:
Reduce or eliminate triggers and emotional distress tied to specific events
Gain clarity and emotional relief without lengthy retelling
Reconnect with a sense of calm, confidence, and control
ART engages both the body and mind, helping the nervous system regulate and allowing healing to happen more efficiently than traditional talk therapy alone.
What ART Can Help With
Accelerated Resolution Therapy can be effective for a wide range of concerns, including:
Trauma and post-traumatic stress (PTSD)
Anxiety and panic
Depression
Grief and loss
Phobias and fears
Relationship distress
Performance anxiety
Low self-esteem
Because ART focuses on how memories are stored, rather than the details of the memory itself, it can be particularly helpful for clients who find traditional trauma work overwhelming or retraumatizing.
